In dit boek zijn ruim tachtig (spot)prenten uit de jaren 1880–1919 bijeengebracht. Eveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld en Marij Leenders laten hiermee op een nieuwe manier de relatie tussen politiek en publiek zien. Het was een tijd van grote veranderingen in de Nederlandse politiek. Nieuwe groeperingen als de confessionelen en socialisten sloegen een bres in het liberale bolwerk en brachten het buitenparlementaire politieke debat op gang. En terwijl op straat de roep om algemeen kiesrecht steeds luider klonk, werd binnen het parlement fel gedebatteerd over de onafwendbare grondwetsherziening.
